Political Thoughts
Hi there. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Wow. Barney Frank has both gravitas and my respect for the following line:
“I try very hard never to break any law I voted for.” I can respect a politician like that.
After the jump, the Youtube video that I’m referring to. Take it for whatever it’s worth.
Much of the rest of it is about prostitution, and Bill Maher gives push-back on the concept that all prostitutes are part of the Human Trafficking horrors. I want a bumper sticker that says “she didn’t want to work 40 hours a week at KFC when she could spend 10 minutes blowing Colonel Sanders.” A fine point. Legalization would help to help normalize prices - driving them down, take sex workers out of “hiding,” and have positive public health consequences. Why is this still illegal?
As things stand, with a very small exception (the de minimis possibility of being arrested for high-end escort work) women are economically rewarded for illegal sex work. If women can apparently charge $5000/night for sex - how is that not a reward for breaking the law? This one has never made sense to me, perhaps some of you could shed light on it?
As George Carlin famously said: Selling is legal, Fucking is legal, why isn’t selling fucking legal?
Yeah I don’t get it either.
Why can someone marry for money but they can’t fuck for money?
Oh wait, maybe it’s true….married people don’t have sex.
yeah, i wish it was legal here in the states.. I wonder how it would change things. here you have to be an independent..it’s funny but if you work for an agent they DO NOT screen as well as you can.. that’s what i’ve heard from a lot of girls anyway
Well, actually I don’t know the number of women that are or are not financially rewarded for illegal sex work. You can’t limit yourself to only talking about high-end prostitutes, either–I would utterly shocked if there were more women selling sex for $5000 than those who were selling for $500. I don’t think that theres tons of people getting rich off of it, though I would say that the majority of people who are doing sex work are able to get by (but then again, so are the people who work at fast food joints). Even within the realm of legal sex work, it varies from people who have very well paid, safe positions doing what they want to do, to others who are risking their health to do something that they feel they have to do. Part of the idea of the push to legalize prostitution (in conjunction with better laws to protect sex workers in general) is to have a structure in place to better track and deal with exploitive situations.
